How are they made?
- Vintage/Antique Motor Oil Cans are purchased from art collectors, antique shops, dealers, flea markets, and online
- 3 days spent washing, cleaning, soaking and sanitizing the cans. The cans are 50+ years old so it takes a while to get all the old oil and stuff out of there. "Very dirty part of the job!"
- We make a template and spend hours of time using a rotary blade to carefully, meticulously cut through the metal to prep for installation/assembly for the neck, pickups, pots, jack, etc
- Solder the pickups, pots, jack, etc
- Sharp edges are sanded and filed so they are safe to the touch. A rubber gasket is also carefully applied and glued to the bottom edge. Rubber feet are installed to the bottom so the Hayburner can stand upright with no stand
- We purchase all new parts, necks, pickups, hardware etc, then we crown and polish the frets and assemble the Hayburner Guitar
- Definitely a labor of love!

FAQ:
Why oil cans?
- They obviously have a very unique, vintage appearance but the metal can also reacts to the magnetic pickups and gives it a one of a kind tone. Electric guitar pickups are magnets and they pickup the the metal strings' vibration in the magnetic field. By having a metal can as the body of the guitar, it reacts to the magnetic field by giving it a very warm, rich tone. It's also essentially a hollow body guitar, since it has a metal can body. It gives the tone some characteristics you would hear from acoustic guitars, banjos, resonators, and electric guitars, all wrapped into one.
- From the time of order to the time of delivery, the total amount of time is about 9-15 business days. After you make your order, your vintage oil can guitar will be shipped within 5 business days of your order. Once shipped, you will receive a tracking code and they are shipped via USPS ground which typically takes 4-8 business days.
Can I pick my own can?
- Yes. If you want to pick your own can, contact us and we will send you pictures of our cans that we currently have in stock. You can also contact us for any special orders, including special pickups, necks, nobs, etc. Some extra fees may apply but we will send you a price quote first.
Are all the cans vintage?
- Yes, they are all authentic previously used vintage cans. The exact age of the cans are unknown, some are 20 years old and some are 60+ years old.
- Each can has its own vintage character from wear and tear. We go through a very long and messy process of cleaning, washing, and sanitizing all the oil cans before building them into guitars. Although we clean them as best as we can, they are not recommended for children under the age of 18.
- Absolutely. You can also choose from different types of pickups that are installed in the oil can guitar.
