The Oil Can Sessions- Coming Soon...

8/2/2017

We are creating a new project and would like to invite you to apply to be part of the project. We've been creating instruments out of antique motor oil cans and the business has been blowing up.

We've been having many media outlets reach out to us for press coverage such as Fox 9 News, CNET, Washington County Bulletin, and other places reached out to partner with them including the Lowertown Guitar Festival, NAMM, some music stores, and a winery in Napa Valley.
The actual assembly and selling of the oil can guitars is very labor intensive and not very profitable, however, it’s an amazing tool to help promote music, create viral videos, and help collaborate with other artists.

The project: “Oil Can Sessions” Similar to the TV Show, “Live from Daryl’s House.”
  • Recording at The Villa Recording Studio in Savage, MN
  • You choose one song to record
  • Each artist can perform as a solo, duo, or three-piece playing one song, either a cover or original, using some of the oil can instruments (bass, guitar, uke, banjo, didley bow, lap steel guitar, etc)
  • You can use your own musicians to play these instruments.
What’s in it for you?
  • No cost to you, tons of free press, advertising, promo, viral videos, free studio recording, free video. We pay for all the studio time, mixing, mastering, video production, etc.
  • We pay for the video production team to film the recording session. We promote this on the website, and all my social media outlets.
  • You get a free copy of the audio track and the video of your performance
  • You can perform a cover or original. All of the material will have links to your website and portfolio to help promote your music.
  • It will be cross promoted with all the other artists on the project.
If you're interested in being part of the project, please submit your EPK, website,  social media page and why you would be a good fit for this project.

How it's made? Hayburner Oil Can Guitar

7/9/2017

One of the biggest questions we get is, "how did you make that?!" There's no secret, just a lot of trial and error, skill, practice, and lots of work. Here's how we do it.
  • Vintage/Antique Motor Oil Cans are purchased from art collectors, antique shops, dealers, flea markets, and online
  • 3 days spent washing, cleaning, soaking and sanitizing the cans. The cans are 50+ years old so it takes a while to get all the old oil and stuff out of there. "Very dirty part of the job!"
  • We make a template and spend hours of time using a rotary blade to carefully, meticulously cut through the metal to prep for installation/assembly for the neck, pickups, pots, jack, etc
  • Solder the pickups, pots, jack, etc
  • Sharp edges are sanded and filed so they are safe to the touch. A rubber gasket is also carefully applied and  glued to the bottom edge. Rubber feet are installed to the bottom so the Hayburner can stand upright with no stand
  • We purchase all new parts, necks, pickups, hardware etc, then we crown and polish the frets and assemble the  Hayburner Guitar
  • Definitely a labor of love!
